Lukewarm Takes: I Hate the Concept of “Abundance Mindset.”

Dear Readers, this blog post is also brought to you by my day job clients this week. This is one of those situations where I just want to shake my head and wish I had the power to fully stop various charlatans from dicking around the mental health world. That’s my firm stance on the matter.

I also firmly believe that anyone who tries to sell anything related to the ‘True Self’ or ‘Abundance Mindset’ is trying to sell you something. I am included. My shop link is very visible on this website.

So what is an “Abundance Mindset?”

I think that a website espousing this can explain it better than I can. In essence, an “Abundance Mindset” is the mindset that there is plenty of money out there for you, and that you must match your ~*~*~ViBrAtIONs~*~*~ and thoughts to the concept of abundance in order to ManIFeSt it in your life.

This means you aren’t supposed to think about or dwell on anything that you lack. This includes food, adequate living arrangements, health care, etc. In the AM theory, thinking about these things will put you in a “Scarcity Mindset” which will then align your energy with Scarcity. Thus, if you think about scarcity, you will ManIFeST it.

While there is some merit to the idea of looking at the various options you have (because let’s admit, there are always options, even if they aren’t ones you want.) there are serious problems with this.

Why is an “Abundance Mindset” total garbage?

The best way to put this is: People who sell you AM are usually….already rich. They make money by selling people courses on how to achieve an AM and thus magically receive riches from the universe. This falls under the same category of scams as so-called “Reality Shifting Readings” and pdfs.

Second, Abundance Mindset puts the blame for generational poverty and systematic oppression solely at the hands of their victims. Just because I acknowledge bigotry doesn’t mean I ManIFesT it into reality. It was there long before I was born.

While the idea behind AM being that there IS enough wealth around the world for everyone does track—but only if it wasn’t tied up in the hands of the greedy upper class. Any billionaire on this planet could make the choice to become a literal super hero and end world hunger, and have the greatest legacy known to humanity. Instead, they’re too busy making sockpuppet accounts on social media in order to tell themselves they are good parents.

Third, AM can put people down a very dangerous road of trauma. In effect, it teaches people to blame themselves for any form of difficulty they have, and it teaches them to blame their thoughts for those problems. Mind policing—in other words. I have seen this more than once at my day job—people upset that somehow they have brought generational trauma, an oppressive system of healthcare, and all the hells of late stage capitalism on themselves—because they dared to slip into a “Scarcity Mindset.” And that takes a lot of work and de-programing to address.

Is there an alternative to the “Abundance Mindset vs Scarcity Mindset dichotomy?”

I have this crazy concept for everyone: moderation. This is something that a lot of people I meet have no idea how to actually put into practice. The fundamental idea behind this is to acknowledge problems and set aside the time to feel your feelings. It doesn’t have to be immediately—because sometimes emergencies do have to be addressed immediately.

I need everyone to set aside some structured time to have a pity party. This can be 15 minutes. It can be (in extreme cases in my case) 36 hours of what I call my ‘Sad Cowboy Hours.’ But, after that, it’s time to explore options and accept that your actions will have more of an effect on your life than magical thinking. Yes, even if you are an occultist.

Ya girl is not out here raw dogging the most restrictive lowFODMAP diet in the world for shits and giggles—it’s to address systematic inflation. And if my bread and cake loving ass can literally force myself to only have a tiny palm-full of blueberries a day as my utmost carb limit, I know you all are capable of so much.

Grab hold of your future. Educate yourself. Look at real options. Feel your feelings. And stop giving your money and influence over your mind to these wild ass con-artists.

Dear Readers, what absurdist armchair psychology or scams have you seen lately?
