DIY Divination Tools: Pokemon

The idea of using cards from the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG) is not a new one. I first heard of this idea on Tumblr. So I am not by any means taking credit for this idea. Instead, I’m taking this public idea and making it public-er. Generally, Pokemon Cards most easily form decks that are either based on the Tarot—or Oracle decks that are based purely on information presented in the Pokemon TCG cards or in other Pokemon. While these are the easiest ways to make use of Pokemon Cards, there are certainly other methods and other crafts that can use them as base supplies.

Tarot Decks

Tarot Decks are split into two categories of cards: The Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana are further split into four suits: Coins (Pentacles), Swords, Wands (Staves), and Cups. Major Arcana represent stages in the Fool’s Journey, and Minor Arcana represent smaller details of that journey—or major characters one meets in the form of the Court Cards. The most straightforward method of turning Pokemon Cards into a Tarot Deck is to assign each of the four suites their own energy type.

When I was working on my own version, I assigned Swords to the Psychic Type, Cups to the Water Type, and Coins to Grass Type. I do not remember what I assigned to Wands, nor how I intended to portray the Major Arcana. I recall that my plan at the time was to use the energy cards themselves for the Aces.

Oracle Decks

Oracle Decks very well may be the easiest way to turn Pokemon Cards into a divination tool. In this case, the magician can mix in whatever cards they please, so long as the deck actually works. forgetful—witch on Tumblr and Litwicksportal are both good resources for potential oracle deck construction and meanings. In this case, I think that card functions from within the game itself have a lot of utility.

Additional Pastabilities

If we consider additional supplies, Pokemon miniatures and figurines could make for good addition to a set of divination bones. The cards could also be cut and attached to wooden disks or resin half-spheres. The coins associated with the Pokemon TCG don’t have a huge monetary value–aside from collectors. I often don’t know what to do with the ones I have, since I don’t care for them and don’t care for the unpredictability of coin-flips when I do play the game.

What would you associate this coin with?
